You Don't Have to Know How to Pose

You Don't Have to Know How to Pose

One of the first things people say to me before a session is:

“But I don’t know how to pose.”

“I am really awkward; I am going to need your help”.

And honestly?

Good.

Confident Black- and- White Portrait with Simple, Relaxed Posing

A stylish black‑and‑white portrait demonstrating how easy posing can be with gentle direction, even for clients who feel unsure in front of the camera.

Because the best photographs usually happen after people stop trying so hard to pose perfectly.

Most people walk into a session feeling nervous.
Even confident people.

And truthfully, I feel awkward walking into a session too. I know what it is like to carry that nervous energy, and because of my own social anxiety, I usually meet it with a little humor. Most of the time, it helps people relax. And if nothing else, at least everyone gets a laugh.

And beneath all of that nervous energy, most people are wondering about the same things.

  • where to put their hands
  • whether they look awkward
  • if they photograph well
  • what side is their “good side”
  • if they will look stiff
  • if they are photogenic enough

And somewhere along the way, so many people started believing they have to perform perfectly in front of a camera to deserve beautiful photographs.

But that has never been what photography is about to me.

I am not looking for perfection.

I am looking for connection.

The small moments in between poses usually become the images people love the most anyway.

The laugh after the awkward moment.
The way someone brushes their hair back without realizing it.
The way a couple naturally leans toward each other.
The split second where someone finally relaxes and becomes fully themselves.

That is where the magic lives.

Most of my sessions are less about “posing” and more about movement, emotion, and interaction.

I will guide you the entire time.

I will tell you where to stand.
What to do with your hands.
Where to look.
How to move.
When to slow down.

But more importantly…

I pay attention to who you are naturally.

Some people are soft and quiet.
Some are bold and expressive.
Some laugh constantly once they relax.
Some take a little more time to open up.

That is okay.

Your session should not feel like trying to force yourself into someone else’s version of beautiful.

It should feel like becoming comfortable enough to exist honestly in front of the camera.

And truthfully, some of the strongest images happen when people stop worrying about looking perfect altogether.

Because confidence in photographs is not really about knowing how to pose.

It is about feeling safe enough to be seen.

That is my job.

Not just taking photographs.

Creating an environment where you can breathe a little.
Relax a little.
Laugh a little.
Exist without overthinking every angle of yourself.

I think that is why storytelling photography matters so much to me.

I do not want your images to feel stiff or overly performed.

I want them to feel like:

  • you
  • your energy
  • your relationship
  • your story
  • your becoming

Years from now I do not want you looking at your images thinking about whether your hand placement was perfect.

I want you to remember how that season of your life felt.

The confidence you were rebuilding.
The excitement of starting something new.
The way your child reached for your hand.
The way your partner looked at you when you started laughing for real.

Those are the moments worth preserving.

So, if you have been putting off booking a session because you are afraid you will not know what to do in front of the camera…

Take a breath.

You do not have to know how to pose.

You just have to show up.

I will help with the rest.
