Sometimes the greatest victories aren't measured by medals. They're measured by the courage to wear USA across your back.
There are moments in life that you know you'll remember forever.
Not because everything went perfectly.
But because you realize you're witnessing something much bigger than the moment itself.
A few weeks ago, I stood behind my camera photographing five young athletes before they left to represent Team USA on the international stage.
As I adjusted lights, straightened jackets, and reminded them to relax, they laughed with each other, teased one another, and acted exactly like teenagers.
And for a little while, that's all they were.
Just five kids.
Five kids from South Texas with big dreams.
Looking back now, after the week they've had, those portraits mean even more than they did the day I took them.
This past week reminded me why I love documenting people more than moments.
Competition is unpredictable.
No matter how many hours you train...
No matter how many sacrifices you've made...
No matter how badly you want something...
There are no guarantees.
Some dreams unfold exactly as planned.
Others don't.
That's sports.
But it's also life.
This week we witnessed heartbreak..
J'Lynn experienced every athlete's nightmare, while Caleb walked away with an incredible 2nd place finish.
J'Lynn bombed out.
If you've never been involved in powerlifting, those two words probably don't carry much weight.
But to an athlete...
They carry all of it.
Months of preparation.
Early mornings or late evenings.
Missed holidays, school functions or having to delay your own birthday plans for weigh-ins and competitions.
Endless hours in the gym.
Just for it to end sooner than they hoped.
It's painful.
It's frustrating.
It's heartbreaking.
But it doesn't erase everything that came before it, and Caleb's 2nd place finish is a reminder that even when the week carries heartbreak, it can still hold something worth celebrating.
They still earned Team USA.
They still stood on an international platform.
They still represented something bigger than themselves.
And that matters.
This week, Addyson stood on top of the podium with a gold medal around her neck after representing the United States as well as best female lifter.
What an incredible accomplishment.
But if I'm being honest...
The medal isn't what I'll remember most.
I'll remember watching a young athlete who earned the chance to wear "USA" across her back and embraced that responsibility with everything she had.
And then Carson stepped onto the platform and wrote his own chapter in gold.
Carson also won gold, and while that result is something to celebrate, I hope one day he looks back at these portraits and remembers what it felt like before the competition began.
The excitement.
The nerves.
The pride.
Those moments deserve to be remembered just as much as the final results.
And while one chapter is closing. Another is just beginning.
As this blog is being published, Elaina is either somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean or has just arrived in South Africa, preparing to compete against some of the strongest young lifters in the world at the IPF World Championships.
As her mom, I don't know exactly how her story will unfold.
I know she's nervous.
And I know there's a part of her that is scared, too, not because she isn't ready, but because this time she won't have her entire support system standing right there beside her in South Africa.
That kind of courage looks different than a lift on the platform, but it is courage just the same.
I know she'll be excited.
I know she'll step onto that platform carrying years of hard work, sacrifice, and determination with her.
And regardless of what happens, I'm already proud.
Because making it there is an accomplishment that very few athletes ever experience.
When I created these portraits, I wasn't thinking about medals.
I wasn't thinking about rankings.
I wasn't thinking about who would win and who wouldn't.
I was thinking about something much simpler.
I wanted these five kids to have photographs that captured who they were in this season of life.
Because seasons change.
The uniforms will eventually be folded away.
The medals will find a place on a shelf.
Records will be broken.
New athletes will come along.
But these photographs...
These photographs freeze a moment in time when five young people earned the privilege of representing their country.
No one can ever take that away from them.
This is why Faces of Strength exists.
Not to photograph the strongest people in the room.
But to tell the stories of the people behind the strength.
Because strength isn't just found on a platform.
Sometimes it's found in getting back up after a disappointing day.
Sometimes it's found in celebrating someone else's victory while carrying your own heartbreak.
Sometimes it's found in boarding a plane to the other side of the world to chase a dream that once seemed impossible.
And sometimes...
Strength looks exactly like five kids from South Texas wearing three simple letters across their backs.
USA.

Anna DLG - We are all so very proud of these young women & men. This is the extreme example of hard work, dedication & devotion. I’ve seen my niece Addy work so hard to get where she is and let me say she makes it look easy but we all know it’s not! Congrats to all the lifters on their personal accomplishments! Way to go Addy & Carson on bringing home the GOLD! Always remember to Live, Laugh & Lift 🏋️♂️🫶🏼
